VAMOS Scholarship
For Hidalgo, Starr & Cameron County high school seniors.
Deadline: April 1, 2010
Recipients from Cameron County will be named "VAMOS/Filemon B. Vela Scholars", in memory of Judge Filemon B. Vela.
Eligibility Requirements
Candidates who meet the following criteria will be considered for the VAMOS scholarship:
- Be a high school senior graduating this Spring, from Hidalgo, Starr or Cameron County.
- Hispanic as defined by U.S. Census Bureau.
- A U.S. Citizen or lawful permanent residents with a valid Social Security Number. All legal permanent resident must submit a copy of his or her valid permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551. Must be resident of Hidalgo County for at least 5 consecutive years prior to application for scholarship.
- Be enrolled full-time at a U.S. accredited College or University for the next 4 academic years.
- Rank in top 25% of his/her high school graduating class and have a minimum GPA of 80/100 or 3.2/4.0.
- Meet minimum SAT or ACT score requirements established by college/university of student's choice.
- Qualify to receive Federal Pell Grant. Student must use the FAFSA to apply for federal financial aid and submit copies of Student Aid Report, income tax returns and college financial aid award letter (if available).
- Do not submit your application to the VAMOS Scholarship Committee unless it is complete and includes all required information. Applications postmarked after the April 1st deadline will not be accepted. No extensions will be given.
- DO NOT fax or e-mail applications, nor enclose any materials not requested.
- Print your full name and social security number on each document you submit.
- Only completed packets will be considered. Scholarship committee will notify only selected recipients.

Student Check List:
- Official Transcript - signed or approved by a counselor or authorized school official. The transcript should display GPA, class rank, class size, and relevant test scores such as SAT and ACT
- Copy of SAC/ACT scores (if not present on transcript)
- Copy of current income tax return and/or FAFSA Student Aid Report (SAR)
- Copy of Permanent Resident Card (if applicable)
- College Financial Aid Award Letter (if you have received it already)
