Mentoring
Mentor Program
Other than financial support, VAMOS provides students with a mentor that encourages and motivates students to do well in school and graduate with a Bachelor's Degree.
The goal of the Mentoring Committee is to develop an effective working relationship with the scholar in order to ensure that the scholar:
- Maintains a minimum 2.75 GPA
- Maintains a minimum course load of 12 hours per semester
- Finds summer internships or enrichment programs
- Receives a Bachelor's Degree
- Obtains a career-track job or acceptance into a graduate program of their choice
Mentors and scholars are matched according to one or more of the following interests:
- Career Goals
- College attended/attending
- Hometown
- Any other similar interests
Role of Mentors
In order to support the scholar, mentors are advised to:
- Maintain contact with their scholar face-to-face, mail, phone, or e-mail on a monthly basis
- Inquire about progress in school, classes, family, work, college life, or anything else that could hinder the scholar’s success.
- Use the mentoring program as a network of resources and information in order to maximize the opportunities for the scholars
- Report to the Committee Chair and/or Executive Director
- Provide continuing advice and support until the scholar graduates
- Encourage the scholar to participate in VAMOS events before and after he/she graduates
It's very important that the mentor program continues to encourage students. With a consistent and strong support system, students are able to endure any difficulties and setbacks they might encounter in college life. We encourage all mentors to recruit new mentors and find new ways to encourage enrolled students to achieve beyond their capabilities.
VAMOS would like to thank all the volunteers who have given their time and energy to our cause.
We would not have been able to serve the students with out their devotion and concern.
